Prof. Dr. Ir. Samsul Rizal, M.Eng, the Rector of Syiah Kuala University, officially launched the World Class Professor (WCP) 2018 Program in the introduction seminar held at the university’s senate hall on August 9, 2018. The first two visiting professors, Prof. Andrew Newman of Georgia Tech, USA, and Prof. Anawat Suppasri of Tohoku University, Japan, were present at the event.
World Class Professor Program is held annually by the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education among others to provide an opportunity for local universities to interact with world class institutes and professors. This year TDMRC Unsyiah wins two grant schemes from World Class Professor Program, namely scheme A and B. Prof. Samsul Rizal, who also leads the program at Unsyiah, stated proudly that the university is the only institution outside Java to win both schemes this year.
The schemes enable TDMRC to conduct an international professor exhange program involving nine professors from world class institutions such as Georgia Institute of Technology and Nanyang Technological University. Other programs that will be conducted under the WCP schemes are joint research and publications, public lecture and workshops, and the Aceh International Workshop and Expo on Sustainable Tsunami Disaster Recovery (AIWEST-DR) 2018.
At this seminar, Prof. Newman and Prof. Suppasri took opportunity to describe briefly their fields of research and some of their important findings. Prof. Newman, who specializes in seismic studies, among others explained that GPS could help us identify seismic faults that are not known but are causing earthquakes, such as the one triggering the Pidie Jaya earthquake in 2016. Similarly, Prof. Suppasri specializes in tsunami modelling. Among the important notes from his presentation is that great earthquakes do not always cause tsunamis, and tsunamis are not always triggered by felt shakes.
