World Disaster Experts Meet Virtually, Discuss Disasters and COVID-19 at the 13th AIWEST-DR 2021

Aceh International Workshop and Expo on Sustainable Tsunami Disaster Reconvery (AIWEST-DR 2021) is academic forum that actively promotes the advancement of research in disaster risk reduction (DRR) across the country. Each year since 2016, the AIWEST-DR annual conference has been continuously coordinated by Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) Universitas Syiah Kuala and International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) of Tohoku University. It has been attended by a large number of academics, activists, and policymakers from numerous research institutions at national, regional, and global level, creating a large network of people concerned with issues of disasters.

AIWEST-DR is the right medium as an effort to evaluate scientific methods, generate and disseminate scientific knowledge, exchange ideas and information broadly, respect the diversity of ideas and approaches, maintain public accountability, achieve excellence and integrity, present accurate knowledge, peer reviewed and reputable. It is proven by the continuous improvement in the quality of publications from AIWEST – DR every year of its implementation. Through the conference, the network has now achieved a significant member of participants that can take part not only in the academic field through research and publications but also contribute to the evidence-based DRR policies nationally, regionally, and locally.

Postponed in 2020 due to Covid-19, this year the AIWEST-DR take place again in Banda Aceh. However, since the Covid-19 pandemic is still ongoing, the conference which will be attended by 7 countries, will be held online. The previous AIWEST-DR was previously held at Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan, in 2019.

Dr. Alfi Rahman as the chairman of the 13th AIWEST-DR 2021 said that, through the conference, researchers, experts, and practitioners will bring together various ideas or issues regarding theory and practice in DRR at local, national and international levels. This international conference is a momentum to synergize and coordinate the roles of government, research institutions, universities, and practitioners as catalysts and dynamists for community resilience.

At the 13th AIWEST-DR activity in 2021, there will be three keynote speakers, i.e. Prof. Fumihiko Imamura, Director of IRIDeS, Tohoku University, Japan, Prof. Helene Joffe, Professor at Faculty of Psychology, University College London, UK, and Prof. Rajib Shaw. Professor at Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University, Japan.

The 13th AIWEST-DR 2021 Conference will be held on 26-27 October 2021. The 2-day event will be used for keynote, panel and parallel sessions where a total of 108 papers will be presented, followed by some special session. The AIWEST-DR conference this time is supported by EPICentre, University College London, Universitas Mataram, Universitas Tadulako, National Defense University of Malaysia, the Higher Education Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the Indonesian Association of Disaster Experts (IABI), as technical support for the 13th AIWEST-DR 2021.
