TDMRC Unsyiah is extremely proud to share that the 11th AIWEST-DR has taken place successfully on October 10-12, 2018 in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. We would like to extend our infinite gratitude to IRIDeS Tohoku University as the organizing partner, and our highest appreciation to the Government of Aceh, the Ministry of Research and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia, IABI, UCL IRDR and USAID as our supporters.
The first day kicked off with an opening remarks by the Acting Governor of Aceh, Ir. Nova Iriansyah, MT, followed by the signing of the Partnership Agreement between TDMRC Unsyiah and University College London Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (UCL IRDR). The keynote speakers, Prof. Dr. Ocky Karna Radjasa, M.Sc and Prof. Shunichi Koshimura, took to the stage. Then two panel sessions by the invited speakers took place in the afternoon.
In the evening, a welcome dinner was held and TDMRC Awards were handed over to the two figures who have made significant contributions to disaster risk reduction at the local and national level. They are Teuku Ahmad Dadek, the Acting Chief of Aceh Emergency Management Agency, dan Ahmad Arif, a senior journalist at Kompas.
The second day was filled with special sessions, paper presentations from five theme groups, student forum, and the closing ceremony, where Dr. Elizabeth Maly from IRIDeS announced the Awards for Best Papers and Youngest Author. The 11th AIWEST-DR ended with a field trip to tsunami sites around the city of Banda Aceh on the third day.
This year we saw many groundbreaking submissions and presentations from various aspects of disaster risk reduction. One of them came from a student of Junior High School (SMPN) 1 Banda Aceh, Wan Lubnayya Nabigha, who conducted research on the perception of tsunami risk among high school students in the city. She received the Youngest Author Awards of 2018, a new category established due to her remarkable participation.
Lastly, we have an important announcement to make: The 12th AIWEST-DR will take place in November 2019 at Tohoku University, Japan. More details to come, but we surely look forward to welcoming you there.
