About sixty local middle and high school students who were participating in Meuraxa Tsunami Heritage Bicycle Rally II 2018 stopped by our office on Sunday, September 23, 2018. Meuraxa Tsunami Heritage Bicycle Rally is an annual event held by Comu Project involving teenagers from several schools in the subdistrict of Meuraxa, Banda Aceh.
The rally would take place along a route in the Ulee Lheu area with upto six stop points, including the tsunami mass grave and TDMRC. At each stop, participants would engage in various educational activities to raise the participants awareness and understanding of the natural hazards that their hometown is exposed to. They also learn how to mitigate the disaster risks.
At TDMRC, the fifth stop point, the students were received by Ms. Intan Dewi Kumala and FASTANA Team. They were then introduced to TDMRC and the office building, informing them that the building could also be used as tsunami evacuation point. The students also learned about tsunami and various other disaster risks through TDMRC’s educational infographics, fun games, as well as quizzes with door prize.
Mardiana, Comu Project’s Public Relation Coordinator, explained that the organization was amazed by the young student’s high enthusiasm on the event and their good knowledge of disaster risk mitigation. Her organization has been building ties with the city’s government agencies to ensure the continuity of this important event. Fortunately the government has respoded positively and agreed to consider inserting it into the following year’s budget plan.
