Tsunami Hazard

Researchers in this group are focusing on providing information for tsunami mitigation by means of numerical simulations, physical modeling, and field survey. We use the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami as the reference for the studies. Previously, we developed scenarios for coastal land use planning for tsunami mitigation using the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami event and applied it at several coastal areas. We also estimated tsunami arrival times for tsunami prone cities in Indonesia, where the information could be useful to manage the city-wide evacuation mechanism. This research cluster also attempt to investigate the role of coastal forest, such as mangroves and casuarina, for mitigating impacts of tsunami waves.

There were three events where we developed a number of research activities, namely the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2010 Mentawai tsunami, and the latest one is the Palu-Donggala Earthquake and tsunami. In recent years, we have also started to use a number of numerical models to reconstruct tsunami waves. Among the models are Cornell Multi-Grid Tsunami Model (COMCOT), Delft3D, DualSPHysic, and OpenFOAM. We also analyse coastal recovery process after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. We use GIS for the analysis and work with other research clusters to understand societal aspects of the recovery, such as community’s livelihood and ecological recovery.

The Yellow Bridge, one of important land marks in Palu, was damaged by the earthquake and tsunami on September 28, 2018.
