As a response to tsunami disaster that devastated Aceh Province on December 26, 2004, Syiah Kuala University through Rector’s Decree No. 1, 2005 launched “Syiah Kuala University for Aceh Reconstruction” initiative which was aimed at facilitating the Indonesian government and the local community in designing a Blue Print for Post Earthquake and Tsunami Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Aceh. This was followed by the establishment of Tsunami Research Center (TRC) as an Information Center for Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster through Rector’s Decree No. 024, 2005.
Later, in the same year, Syiah Kuala University established Mitigation Center (MC) through Rector’s Decree No. 215. Due to the overlapping activities, Syiah Kuala University management merged the two centers into what is now known as Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) through Rector’s Decree No. 418, 2006. The international Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) community attending the First Annual International Workshop and Expo on Sumatra Tsunami Disaster and Recovery, also acknowledged the establishment of TDMRC in a Declaration signed on December 7, 2006.
