As the second activity in FASTERIZATION (FASTANA Action for Disaster Mitigation), on Monday December 9, 2018 FASTANA TDMRC gave disaster lessons to the children of Lamteungoh, Peukan Bada, Aceh Besar. The children showed great enthusiasm as the FASTANA crews Baginda Ilham and Lucya Agustine delivered the lessons. The materials taught were in line with the initial goal of the activity, which was to raise awareness on disaster among children through SANA (Sosialisasi Sadar Bencana – Disaster Awareness Socialization).

The purpose of SANA is to teach vulnerable children what to do when an earthquake strikes and how to evacuate effectively. In addition to learning, participants of the activity also cheered up with puppet performance by FASTANA team in a session called DOBRAK (Dongeng Bertemakan Kebencanaan – Disaster-themed Stories). The puppets were played by FASTANA member Maulana Rizky to a story about Badu and a little girl who were seeking shelter from an earthquake. The children also performed a song called “Mitigasi Gempa Bumi” (Earthquake Mitigation) in the rythm of “Naik Becak”, a popular Indonesian children song.

SANA and DOBRAK were also appreciated by the parents who were present at the site. “We are thankful to the FASTANA team for helping to educate our children about disaster. Certainly this activity will help them to understand disaster mitigation and evacuation steps whenever a disaster comes to our village again,” expressed Ms. Dewi, one of the participants’ parents.

At the end of the activity, the children received small prizes as a reward for their engagement and enthusiasm. Hopefully they left with an improved awareness and understanding of earthquake mitigation.
