The Launching of Earthquake Resistant House

Banda Aceh, TDMRC. Applied Research Unit – Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC), Syiah Kuala University, held The Inauguration of Earthquake Resistant House, yesterday, Wednesday (25/01) in the backyard of TDMRC Building, Meuraxa, Banda Aceh.

Rector Syiah Kuala University, Prof. DR. Darni M. Daud MA, in his statement said that in the future the government and community in Aceh should strictly follow the manual for the construction of resistant building and house. This is because we live in the prone area to disaster, in this case earthquake.

“We should appreciate the government for their effort in building thousand houses for poor people in Aceh. But, it would be better if the houses are strong and resistant to earthquake.” He explained.

Actually, in some earthquake-prone areas, they have proposed and built various models of earthquake resistant houses. But each model has its own redudency and deficiency. TDMRC itself, has used pre-cast system made from light concrete in designing this house that is excellent in quality escort, production acceleration, and implementation. The development is much easier because of it does not require heavy equipment.

This inauguration activity was conducted simultaneously with Workshop on Earthquake Resistant House and Meet the Press that were attended by academician, journalists, government employees from related agencies, and NGO’s.

Through these activities, it is hoped that disaster information and knowledge can be spread wider to all community components so that they can be more aware to disaster issues and its risk reduction.
